User Classification

There are six categories of drug use. These categories are based on the type of relationship established between the person and the drug. They are as follows:
  • Non User
  • Experimental Drug User
  • Occasional Drug User
  • Habitual Drug User
  • Compulsive Drug User
  • Poly Drug User

Non User

... is the person who has never abused licit drugs or used illicit drugs

Experimental Drug User

... is a person who has tried a drug once in order to experiment, but does not continue its use.

An Occasional Drug User

... uses drugs depending on the occasion. Factors such as peer pressure, and the availability of substances are some of the most important reasons in their decisions to use drugs.

A Habitual Drug User

... usually says that he or she began using drugs for various reasons. There is regularity to this type of use and thus psychological addiction develops.

Compulsive Drug User

... lives for the drug and cannot stop using it. They will use any means to get it. This addiction is, in many cases, both a physical as well as a psychological illness.

The Poly Drug User

... is a person who uses a combination of licit and/or illicit drugs. Poly drug users are prone to experimentation in pursuit of greater 'highs'.
