The Self Destructive Use of Drugs

'Drug' refers to any psychoactive/mind altering substance which, when consumed by an individual, leads to behavioural changes with potentially negative consequences for the individual, family and the community.

The negative consequences of drug use can truly be described as a human tragedy as substance abuse destroys the mind and body of the user.

Drug consumption to some users is a vice; to others, it is a solution.

Regardless of its role, drug consumption has a myriad of attendant consequences such as crime, homelessness, family dysfunction, domestic violence, school indiscipline, educational dysfunction, HIV/AIDS, low/lost productivity, road accidents and mental illness.

These negative consequences not only hinder the socio-economic development of our society, but they also threaten its stability.

(Harriot, 2001)
