Drug Demand Reduction Awareness Prescription Drugs

Description

Certain prescription drugs contain opioid, a central nervous system (CNS) depressant and stimulants which, when taken for non-medical reasons (abused), can alter the brain's activity.

The nonmedical use of prescription drugs is also harmful and is often overlooked.

There are three main classes of prescription drugs that are commonly abused:

  • Opiods, which are most often prescribed to treat pain.
  • CNS depressants, which are most often used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders.
  • Stimulants, which are prescribed to treat the sleep disorder narcolepsy, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obesity.

Harmful Effects

  • In small doses, tranquillizers can relieve anxiety.
  • Increasing the quantity leads to drowsiness.
  • Depending on the amount used the effects can last for 3 to 6 hours.
