Drug Demand Reduction Awareness Methamphetamines Ice

Description

Methamphetamine is a powerful addictive stimulant that has a very pronounced effect on the central nervous system.

The drug can be easily made with relatively inexpensive over-the counter ingredients. It is a white, odourless, bitter-tasting crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water or alcohol.

It was developed from its parent drug, amphetamine and was used originally in nasal decongestants and bronchial inhalers.

Harmful Effects

Methamphetamines, even in small doses, can increase wakefulness and physical activity and decrease appetite.

Methamphetamine has toxic effects. A single dose of the drug has been shown to damage nerve terminals in dopamine-containing regions of the brains of animals.

Additionally, the drug has the following effects:

  • It creates a general sense of well-being.
  • After the initial 'rush', there is typically a state of high agitation which, in some individuals, can lead to violent behaviour.
  • High doses can elevate the body's temperature to dangerous, sometimes lethal levels, as well as cause convulsions.

Prolonged abuse of methamphetamine results in many damaging effects including addiction. In some chronic users, tolerance can develop which results in the user seeking to intensify the desired effects, thereby taking higher doses of the drug or taking it more frequently.
