Alcohol

Description

  • Alcohol is a depressant drug because it slows down the brain's ability to think, make decisions and judgements.

  • Alcohol is consumed in the form of beverages (rum, beer, wine, gin etc.). It is the percentage of alcohol in a drink, and not the type of drink, that affects a person.

Harmful Effects

  • Drinking large quantities of alcohol over a long period of time can do serious damage to your body. Brain damage, ulcers, liver disease, malnutrition, heart disease, and various cancers are more common among heavy drinkers.

  • Pregnant women who drink risk having babies with birth defects, sometimes very serious ones. It is known that the more a pregnant woman drinks, the higher the risk for birth defects.
